community support
The owners of Mtubatuba Bed & Breakfast have a strong bond with their surrounding community, as can be seen with co-owner Ida Scheepers who is currently conducting research in the field of community psychology and has long been involved with tourism development in the area. Many local people have benefited from Ida's mentoring programme, as have their products (www.veyane.co.za) and local produce.
Qubuka School is a primary school situated on the R618 near the Nyalazi gate of the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. Ida helped the school to establish a school choir and a cultural programme - visitors are welcome to pop in and pay a visit, as the choir often hosts impromptu performances.
We are very proud of the school choir, as each year they compete at local and regional levels in competitions, however as can be seen on current photos, the attire looks a bit tired... Furthermore, the school is also in desperate need of a computer centre and library. Any cash donations will be greatly appreciated and will go to the parent committee that will distribute the funds for the above-mentioned necessities - this can be facilitated by Ida.
On a grim note, the community around this area is sadly ravaged by Aids and many of the little children are orphans, now in the care of their elderly and indigent grandparents. Visitors are always welcome to bring tangible donations in the form of clothes, stationery, soccer and netball balls, etc.
